For the first time in the 16 year history of the iD International Emerging Design Awards, the awards winners were named at a show they were unable to attend.
Finalists from 14 countries filmed themselves and their collections on their phones in their bedrooms, apartment building hallways and parks during lockdown. They sent their video to Dunedin and it was edited into a wonderful film by NHNZ. Paradoxically the film provided a very intimate look at the emerging finalists, as viewers got to see them explain their designs, their inspiration and see them in their own environment.
iD International Emerging Designer Awards in partnership with Otago Polytechnic have assembled an unrivalled panel of 16 jurors from five countries. Winners will be announced live at a glamorous event at Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin on Friday 7 August 2020.
iD International Emerging Designer Awards in partnership with Otago Polytechnic is the only young designer show anywhere in the world to accept entries from recent fashion graduates throughout the globe. And this year, it’s going to also be the first to judge and host its awards show online. This is the 16th year the iD Dunedin Fashion Inc. has presented the Awards and this year designs from the 33 finalists from 14 countries will be showcased in an exciting video show produced by international production house, NHNZ.
Judges said winner Rebecca Carrington’s design was “uplifting and inspiring”, adding: “In a time of anxiety and negativity globally, Rebecca’s collection was a breath of fresh air. There was a sense of playfulness which belied the intricate detailing of her design showing talented craftsmanship and story-telling. Her collection brings a smile to your face.”
‘To fur or to faux?’ is a question on many fashionistas minds these days. This year at iD Dunedin Fashion Week, attendees can consider this question in the presence of two devoted fur practitioners. Sixteen acclaimed New Zealand designers will showcase their Autumn/Winter 2019 ready-to-wear collections at the iD Dunedin Fashion Shows on Friday 15 March and Saturday 16 March: Carlson, Charmaine Reveley, Company of Strangers, DADA, Hailwood, Kate Sylvester, Liam, Maaike, MILD-RED, Nom*D, Ruby, Stolen Girlfriends Club, WORLD, Wynn Hamlyn, Yvonne Bennetti and Zambesi.

Last night, popular crowd favourite, Swanndri, made its debut on the iD catwalk complete with injured Highlanders stars Waisake Naholo, Lima Sopoaga, Ash Dixon and Dan Pryor, who seemed at home on the 120m-long raised catwalk at the Dunedin Railway Station, even managing to pass a rugby ball between them as they went.
