Meet the iD Board

Sally McMillan, iD Co-Chair and Principal, McMillan&Co.

What are your personal highlights of iD Fashion since becoming Co-Chair of the iD Board?

The commencement of each runway show is a highlight. Such a huge amount of work goes into getting iD to the catwalk each time; the relief and pure happiness I feel when the lights go down and the music goes up at the start of the show, when there’s nothing left to do but sit back and revel in the glorious fruits of our labour, is immense.

Can you name some of your favourite New Zealand designers?

Marilyn Sainty, Rosaria Hall, Zambesi and NOM*d are my favourites.

You’re taking a year out with the Board to do some planning, is there anything particular you are hoping to achieve in this time?

iD is in a consultation process looking at ways of moving towards the greater commercialisation of the event. This is a massive and complex undertaking, but we hope that by the time of our next event in 2027 we will have achieved a higher degree of financial sustainability, and can present a more comprehensive iD offering to a wider audience. As a fashion lover and a lawyer, what are your work wardrobe staples?

Fortunately, the standard “wardrobe” of my professional role aligns well with the aesthetic of some of my favoured NZ designers, and so semi-tailored pieces, often in black, are staples.

What do you love about Dunedin fashion?

I love the irreverent twist of Dunedin fashion. Also, I love that local designers are not all about the flash of the flesh - the higher coverage requirements dictated by our cooler climes also works better for the aging fashionistas amongst us.
