Monkey See, Monkey Do
“Monkey See, Monkey Do” explores ritual and the primal need for structure. Through ‘primitive tailoring,’ the collection questions the forces underpinning Britishness, negotiating the tensions between nature, church, and state. Frankie’s approach focuses on unconventional pattern-cutting and a study of human articulation, using a cubic joined figurine wrapped in masking tape and scaled 11.5x to human proportions to develop patterns. The narrative references the “Beach Church” (CSSM) in Bude, Cornwall, drawn from Frankie’s father’s late-1970s childhood trips. Alongside garments, ‘Strange fossils, an archive of belongings’ introduces a series of wearable “artifacts” designed to satirically question value and materiality, including a soap-on-a-rope handbag, tile flip-flops, and a Banana Guard of the Cerne Abbas Man’s Club.
