Applications for the iD International Emerging Designer Awards 2023, in partnership with the Otago Polytechnic, are now open.

The iD Awards was launched in 2005 and now attracts designers from all over the world, as finalists travel to Dunedin, New Zealand, with the opportunity to learn, collaborate and connect during the iD Dunedin Fashion Week. The iD Awards enables the future of sustainable fashion design to be showcased to fellow emerging designers, the jury of fashion professionals and a wider public audience.  Many of the iD Award finalists are leading the way in cutting edge technology in fabric production, sustainability, design and manufacturing techniques.  

Fashion media both nationally and internationally have highlighted the event as unique, and iD can confidently say that the iD Awards is the only event of its kind in Australasia.

For 2023 the iD Awards we are pleased to announce that we returning to a physical event, with an in person  judging day and fashion show.  Therefore, all finalists must attend the event in Dunedin, New Zealand from 30 March – 2 April 2023.

There are no design restrictions, sections or specifications for collections, other than an emphasis on innovation, originality, creativity, quality and sustainability.  

Eligibility

  • Entrants can either be studying fashion/ textile design or have graduated within the last five years.

  • Entrants must submit a collection size of 3-5 outfits.

  • There are no age restrictions.

  • The collection can be created by an individual or can be collaborative.

  • Entrants can be based anywhere in the world and do not have to reside in New Zealand to enter but selected finalists must be willing to travel to Dunedin, at their own cost, for the judging and presentation of collections at the iD Dunedin Fashion Show.

To complete the entry form below you will need to provide the following information:

Name and contact details
College/university or tertiary institution details as well as your lecturers contact details Collection Name


Your Collection Statement Summary (200 words maximum)
This is what the judging panel will review to understand your design inspiration, techniques, materials and the hallmarks of the collection you are submitting.  If you are selected as a finalist, this statement will appear in the event programme for the runway show and on the iD website. If you created the fabrics, accessories etc in the design, please ensure you include this. Please note this may be edited at the discretion of the Event Manager and Publicity Team.


Your Design Influence (400 words maximum)
This can be a broader explanation of your collection and can include more details than what was included in your Collection Statement Summary. Here you can include more information about the collection you are submitting and details on your previous notable works and achievements, as well as your future aspirations for your career in the fashion industry.  


Sustainability (200 words maximum)
Explain how you incorporated sustainability in your design and how consideration of sustainability influenced your design.


Natural Luxury with Wool (200 words maximum)
If you used wool in your collection, please tell us where you have used wool and anything innovative about its use.


Your multipage PDF
You must prepare a multipage A4 PDF (maximum of 8 pages, less is fine) containing the following:

  1. 2 x high resolution hero images of one or more of your collection - 1 x portrait and 1 x landscape orientation for programme and website, e.g. of model(s) in collection outfit(s) or a detailed view as desired. These images must be suitable for print media . You must own the copyright of these images.

  2. Line up of the submitted collection as a whole - a front view and a back view. Please include technical drawings if the design structure isn’t clear from the photograph.

  3. Designers choice (optional), if you wish, include one page of other images of your collection or previous work for the jurors, please include information about the image for example as shown at Melbourne Fashion Festival 2021; or an image of  previous work .

    VERY IMPORTANT - please make sure the jury can understand your collection (structure, fabrication, concept) through the images you select.

How to label your PDF
Name your file as follows: first name_surname_institution_country
E.g. 'Taylor_Smith_Otago Polytechnic_New Zealand'

iD Fashion champions diversity and inclusivity in fashion. To that end, if you have requirements such as size, ethnicity and age diversity for your models we will try to accommodate this.

Note all models must be 16 years of age and older.
